Henry III and the Second Baron’s War

A Free Online Course:
Course Description: Henry III inherited the crown as a boy in 1216 amid the First Barons’ War, with Louis of France controlling large parts of England and royal power near collapse. Under the regency of William Marshal and the backing of the papacy, the young king’s forces won decisive victories in 1217, stabilising the realm. Over the following decades, his governors rebuilt the monarchy’s finances and authority until Henry assumed full control in 1227. Despite later military failures in France and periodic baronial unrest, administrative consolidation, architectural patronage, and deep piety marked Henry’s long reign. When he died peacefully in 1272, the succession passed smoothly to his son Edward—an outcome unimaginable at the desperate outset of his reign.
Over six weeks, we will look at the tumultuous events where truth is stranger than fiction. Drama, intrigue, rivalry, treachery, rebellion, pestilence, famine, and political manoeuvring resulted in Henry’s barons, led by his brother-in-law. Simon de Montfort was rebelling against him.
The reign of Henry III rarely features in the school history curriculum. Ignored and unknown to most people, the origins of our modern state lie in these Plantagenet years.
Dates: Starts Wednesdays    October 14th for 6 weeks.

A Great & Terrible King: The reign of Edward I

A Free Online Course:
To many, Edward I is the greatest English King. Aged sixty-seven when he died, he played a major role in crushing the Baron’s revolt in his father’s reign before going with his wife, Eleanor of Castile, on crusade. A major figure in European diplomacy, Edward I sought to curb France’s power in the southwest of the continent. Vilified for his conquest of Wales and hated north of the border as the ‘Hammer of the Scots’ the reign of King Edward lays the foundation for the successes England enjoyed in the next century.
Join me over six weeks to discover this largely unknown King of England and his equally unknown wife.
Dates: Wednesdays, November 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th December 2nd and 9th.
Start time: 9.30am
Online via Zoom
Cost: Free

This series focusses on Women and Power and will cover Lucrezia Borgia,Catherine the Great, Marie Antoinette, and Evita.

Sarah explains:
“The lenses of history are often gendered. Powerful women have repeatedly been remembered through stories of sexuality, vanity, ambition, and failure. They were adulterers, murderers, mistresses, religious zealots, thieves, and traitors. They were known during their lifetimes or reinvented after their deaths as wicked women.
This lecture series looks at a selection of women who have assumed positions of power and who have, rightly or wrongly, been maligned by history, by propaganda and by art and literature.”

Film History: 5 British Films of the Swinging 60s

Dates: From Nov 2nd – Dec 1st

Day and Time: Mondays 2-4pm
Cost: £50 for 5 sessions

Course Description

With a largely London-focused outlook centring around youth culture, pop-music, fashion and social freedoms various British films attempted to capture the zeitgeist of ‘Swinging Britain’. Some of these films became an essential part of the scene themselves; some fell slightly off the mark, others sought to capture the highs and the lows and speculate upon the future. We explore the contrasts and the common factors, considering their appeal then and now. A Hard Day’s Night (1965) , Three Hats for Lisa (1965), Georgy Girl (1966) , Darling (1966) , Privilege (1967)

Film History: 5 Classic Made for TV Plays

Dates: From Nov 4th Dec 3rd
Day and Time: Wednesdays Film History: 5 Classic Made for TV Plays
7pm – 9pm
Cost: £50 for 5 sessions

Course Description

Be it as a Play for Today, or one of the many once numerous anthology series, some say the stand-alone TV play was a key feature in a Golden Age of British Television. Often regarded as a ‘writers medium’ touching on issues which could be at once topical, political, humorous and timeless we explore 5 works from writers such Alan Bennett, Willy Russell, Alan Plater and even Michael Palin . Land of Green Ginger (1973) , Our Day Out (1977), One Fine Day (1979) , An Englishman Abroad (1983) , East of Ipswich (1987)

Film History: 5 BBC Ghost Stories for Christmas Revisited

Dates: From Nov 6th – Dec 4th
Day and Time: Fridays 11 – 1pm
Cost: £50 for 5 sessions

Course Description

A reoccurring feature throughout British TV in the 1970s, the BBC Ghost Story for Christmas has seen a resurgence of interest and a revival in recent years. With their remit to be a little unsettling and not outright horror, and keep within a tight budget, we explore some classics. Consider their appeal then and now as well the varying interpretations of academics. The Stalls of Barchester (1971), A Warning to the Curious (1972), The Treasure of Abbot Thomas (1974), Lost Hearts (1973), The Ice House (1978).
