One of the few positive outcomes of the Covid Epidemic was the expansion of flexible life long learning opportunities using the online Zoom Platform.
A trail blazer in exploiting the opportunities provided by remote online teaching was the Workers Education Association(WEA).
Post Covid, online learning has remained popular, providing a flexible, accessible, inclusive learning platform for all. Whilst online learning provides value to all, it also has particular value to those who face limiting challenges to travelling to attend physical learning venues.
In 2025 the WEA sadly faced the removal of substantial Government funding, leading to the collapse of much of it previous online course options. The limited courses that the WEA now provides are priced at a level many cannot afford.
At the same time local WEA Branches found that they were similarly no longer able to provide Face To Face in-venue learning with the removal of funding support.
The Historian’s Collective was born out of a determination by ex-WEA Students and Teachers to continue to provide affordable life long learning opportunities in the tradition of past WEA Courses.
We believe that there are a core of brilliant ex-WEA Teachers prepared to continue their excellent teaching, and there is also a demand from potential students for this teaching. We also believe that there is potential to grow the participation of both teachers and students beyond even the audience the WEA reached.
The Historian’s Collective and this Web Site, attempts to connect Independent Teachers and their potential students.
We want to support life long learning in all its forms, and welcome support for local life-long learning organisations trying to fill the gap left by the WEA by also providing in-venue classes.
In the future we aim to develop other study profiles on this site, beyond History. So sections devoted to supporting the study of Literature, Creative Arts, and so on would be possible.
